Howard Clyde Powers, 83, beloved art teacher with Monahans-Wickett-Pyote ISD for over half a century, passed away on July 1 at Ward Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 15, 1934 in Avon, South Dakota to Walter J. and Mildred L. (Pope) Powers, the youngest of three children.
He attended French School until the eighth grade and graduated from high school in Mitchell, SD and then graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1956 and went on to earn a Master's Degree in Art Education from Sul Ross University in 1966. He began his teaching career in Clarksville, Minnesota and was then drafted into the U.S. Army in 1957. He accepted a teaching position in Monahans after his honorable discharge in 1959 and remained here for the remainder of his life.
He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Monahans and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He is remembered as being a kind person with a neat sense of humor and frequently took meals to home bound people and would take them to the local coffee shop.
In 2015, Powers was honored by the Texas Art Educator Association for his 60 years of teaching. He has also been recognized locally with the Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership and Citizen of the Year Awards. He was a pillar of the community, both through his art and his dedication to many worth causes.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Viola Powers Wittstruck and Harold Powers.

He is survived by two nephews, Kenneth Wittstruck and Dwight Wittstruck.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 5 at Harkey Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 6 at First United Methodist Church of Monahans with Rev. Beth Harrington officiating. Interment will follow at Monahans Memorial Cemetery.
