Jesus Armendarez

March 10, 1921 — October 8, 2015

Jesus Jose Armendarez, often called Jessie by his friends, of Monahans passed away on October 8, 2015, at the age of 94.
Jesus was well-known to local residents as a dedicated patriot of the United States. He volunteered for many years helping place flags on the graves of veterans at the Monahans Memorial Cemetery on all patriotic events, especially Memorial Day. Although confined to a motorized wheel-chair, Jesus greeted those he met with a smile.
He was born March 10, 1921 in Redford, Texas to Antonio Navarro and Petra Armendarez. He was a Catholic.
Jesus was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Pacific Theater in 1943 and 1944. He received an honorable discharge as a Seaman First Class in 1946 and was the recipient of the Victory Medal for WWII. He was based out of the U.S. Naval Station at Arzew, Algeria and served aboard the LST's 492 and 665 (Tank Landing Ships).
After his service in the U.S. Navy, he served for over 40 years in the Merchant Marines and retired in 1985. He made his permanent home in Monahans after his retirement.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Harkey Funeral Home. Father John Lucido will conduct the service.
Jesus was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace Armendarez; and partner, Pilar Cordero.
He is survived by two sons, Jesus Jose Armendarez, Jr. and Oscar Armendarez, both of Monahans; grandchildren, Jesse Armendarez of Monahans, Hailey Armendarez of Vallejo, CA, Joseph Armendarez of San Antonio, Oscar Armendarez, Jr, Bonae Armendarez, Dale Armendarez and Jose Armendarez, all of Sacramento, CA; one great grandchild, Oscar Armendarez III of Sacramento.
