Calvin Glen Armstrong

November 6, 1935 — January 21, 2024

Calvin Glen Armstrong passed from this life of pain to his heavenly home on January 21, 2024, and is now pain free. Calvin was born on November 6, 1935, in Hearne, Texas to Claude H Armstrong, Sr. and Wilma Mae Smith Armstrong. Calvin was a true American who worked throughout his life to help build this Nation. Calvin started his long and interesting work history with the Coca-Cola Bottling plant in San Antonio, Texas. His work with Coke relocated him to lowa where he met his first wife, Patricia Burkhart, and started his family. He soon moved on to the pipeline industry where he excelled and his talent and expertise as a welder and mechanic shined. He worked across the United States for various pipeline companies. He also did maintenance and welding projects for many individuals and for several diverse industries including Walter's Sanitation, Rocko Trucking, Iowa State University, Flummerfelt Homes, and underground storage caverns in Des Moines. The proudest and most enthusing period in his career was working on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. He had many fond and interesting stories to tell about the friendships, experiences, and the Alaskan wildlife he encountered. After 30 plus years helping to build and maintain the pipelines of America, he retired from the industry. This did not end his need to stay active, however. The lure of his childhood home eventually got the best of him, and he moved back to Texas where he devoted many years to, and eventually retired from, Brantley Trucking in Monahans. Calvin was an amazing cook and known for his homemade biscuits and gravy as well as banana bread and pudding which he shared with many people wherever he called home. He would often tell stories of how they cooked food with the welding equipment while working on the pipelines.

Calvin is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Marion, Elmer, Jesse and Walter, as well as one great granddaughter, Madilynn.

He is survived by two daughters, both living in lowa: Carolyn Armstrong of Des Moines and Annette Gaskill (Ray) of Boone, one sister and three brothers, all in Texas: Mildred Dove of Cameron, Claude (Betty) of Kerens, James (Wanda) of Tye, and Marvin (Patti) of Killeen; and by six grandchildren: Sarah Benge (Mark) of Urbandale, Iowa, Emily Miller (Josh) of Pilot Mound, Iowa, Alison Emmerson (Graham) of El Dorado Hills, California, Jacob Robbins (Jordan) of Monahans, Texas, Garrett Robbins (Emily) of Abilene, Texas and Rachel Robbins (James) of San Angelo, Texas and 12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Calvin was always so willing to go out of his way to help someone in need and did so too many times to count. He will be deeply missed by his surviving family, lifelong friends, and his special "pup dog", Lady. We shall always treasure the special moments we had with Calvin, and the many memories.
