George “Bill” William Grant,71, of Monahans Texas, passed away on January 6,2026, in Odessa Texas.
Bill was born in Big Spring, Texas on June 22, 1954, to Jack and Lois Grant. Two months later, his family moved to Monahans. Bill attended school on Monahans, graduating in 1972. He attended North Texas State University in Denton, graduating with a degree in Business Marketing. Bill returned to Monahans where he worked at Trio Motor Company then went into business with his father, Jack, at Texas Lease Works. Building pads for drilling oil wells. He figured the amount of dirt needed for construction. He also managed Roust Abouts and was Business Manager for Texas Lease Works.
Bill’s interest were music, John Wayne, and Dennis the Menace. At age 13, he received an acoustic guitar and taught himself to play it. He also played bass guitar, which was his favorite. In addition, he could play piano and write music. He played in numerous rock bands and was the lead singer. Bill also was a big fan of John Wayne. He knows his lines by heart to El Dorado and Rio Lobo. He collected some John Wayne memorabilia; most received at gifts. John Wayne t-shirts were his favorite shirts to wear.
Bill was an original of First Baptist Church Praise Band, formed by Dan Gibbs. He was lead guitarist and singer. First Baptist Choir was one of his favorite places to sing. He sang high tenor. Also, Bill accompanied many singers on guitar. In addition, he also enjoyed singing duets with his wife, Linda. Their voices blended with his tenor to her alto. Bill also sang with his daughter and son.
Two more hobbies for Bill were hunting and fishing. He enjoyed driving his 1966 Ford Bronco hunting. Many Thanksgivings were spent fishing with his entire family at the Bean Fishing Camp at Lake Buchanan. Another interest for him was Monahans Community Theater. He participated in “this West Texas Country”, “Potatoes on Broadway”, and “Oliver”. Bill’s entire family was in “Oliver”. Playing the villain, Mr. Bumble, he was the character who would not give Oliver any more food.
God and Family were Bill’s greatest loves. He attended First Baptist Church of Monahans, serving as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He met his wife, Linda Wein, in the Singles Sunday School Department. They met in December and were married in October,1985. In 1994, their twins, Jordan and William, were born. One event Bill considered one of his greatest blessings happened in 2004. He quit working in the oil field and took a year off to attend University of Texas of the Permian Basin and earned another degree in Elementary Education. After teaching Fourth Grade Sunday School for ten years, Bill knew he enjoyed that age group. He completed teaching in Pecos for three and a half years, then taught Fifth and Sixth Grade in Monahans for fourteen years. His specialties were reading and Math, plus he was quite the historian. One of his special interests was the U.S. Space Program. He knows the name of every space flight, when it was launched, and returned, and the names of every astronaut and when he or she flew.
Bill is preceded in death by his brothers, Ray and Jerry Grant, father Jack Grant, mother Lois Grant, and maternal grandmother Ada Cheek.
Bill is survived by his wife of forty years, Linda Grant, daughter Jordan Robbins (husband Jacob) Son William Grant, his sister Melwyn Sims (husband Danny). He was Papa t two of his greatest blessings, John Robbins and Emma Robbins. His favorite time was spent creating battlefields and victories with John and teaching Emma how to howl like a wolf. He was also good at creating animated voices such as Donald Duck & Elmer Fudd.
Family Visitation will be held Monday, January 12,2026 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Harkey Funeral Home. The only viewing of Bill will be at the family viewing. Burial will be at Monahans Memorial Cemetery at 10:00 AM on Tuesday January 9, 2026, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church.
Known as a calm, fair man, Bill will be missed. His musical talents, his quick, hilarious sense of humor, his quiet wisdom and intelligence were what made him unique. The greatest compliments he has been given are he never said a bad word about anyone and loved his Lord.
