Nellie Jo Hill, a trailblazer in law enforcement and a beloved matriarch, passed away on June 7, 2025, in Brownwood, Texas. Born on December 15, 1931, in Georgia Mountain, Alabama, Nellie was a pioneer who forever left her mark on the community of Monahans, Texas. She made history as the first female police officer in Ward County, proudly serving the Monahans Police Department for twenty-two years. Nellie's commitment to her career continued as she served for twelve years as a sheriff’s deputy, embodying the principles of dedication and service.
Nellie was not just known for her professional accomplishments; she was also a cherished family member and friends. Nellie's interests were as vibrant as her spirit; she found great pleasure in watching "Walker Texas Ranger," reflecting her appreciation for justice and strong characters. Surrounded by her loving family, she advocated strength and compassion in all aspects of life. Her daughter, Vickie Jo Hamilton Denney; her son, Rickie and Leatha Collins; and son-in-law, Walter Denney, and sister-in-law Joyce Claburn held special places in her heart. Nellie's family continued to grow with her grandchildren, Ashley and Matt Beard, Samuel Joe Collins, Mark and Francisca Nixon, Jesse and Amanda Wood, Bubba Thomas Vannoy, Maria, Janell Mae Vannoy, Meagan Chelsea Moore, Jack and Grayce Carter, Pam and Whit Bonner, Angie and Brian Steen, and Michael and Cindy Meredith. She adored her many great-grandchildren, Rianne, Lilly, Shelby, Leyia, Avery, Aiden, Kyran, Luke, Cobie, Jordaan, Christian, Sky, Derick, Mason, Benjamin, Miguel, and Micheal Wayne, all of whom brought immense joy to her life. In addition, she had many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Dee Hill; her parents, Joe Claburn and Beatrice Claburn, Minnie Denney; her brothers, Otho Ollie Claburn (wife Christine) and Austin Dale Claburn (wife Yvonne); as well as her sister, Gladys Harris (husband Bill), younger brother,Charles Onmon Claburn, and other beloved family members.
Her legacy as a pioneering woman in law enforcement and a devoted family member will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
