Nora Ortiz Jasso, 60, of Monahans, peacefully passed away at her home surrounded by family on December 8, 2020. Nora was born in Pecos, TX, to Louis G. Ortiz and Benedicta Guevara Ortiz on April 6, 1960.
Nora graduated from Pecos High School in 1978. Shortly after graduation, she married the love of her life, Joel M. Jasso, on April 7, 1979, in Pecos, TX. The couple lived in Pecos for a short time after marriage until they moved to Monahans in 1983. Nora worked at The Prescription Shop and Southern Union Gas Company before gaining employment with Monahans-Wicket-Pyote Independent School District. During her time with MWPISD, she worked at Tatom and Sudderth Elementary before accepting a job at the administration building as the Superintendent's administrative assistant. Nora worked for the school district for over 19 years until she fell ill and could no longer work.
In 1995, Nora was diagnosed with breast cancer. She won her battle and went into remission. Several times throughout her life, the breast cancer returned, and she continued to overcome the odds. In 2018, Doctors told Nora cancer had spread, and she was given six months to one year to live. Even then, Nora did not get discouraged. She fought and survived over two years before God; the Father called her home.
Nora never allowed cancer to define her. She fought the battle by simply living life. Nora had a pain tolerance that was unheard of. If there was ever a time that she was not feeling good, she never showed it. She refused to be a victim of her circumstances. She enjoyed supporting her family in everything they took part in. Once the kids were out of the house, Nora and Joel took many trips and weekend getaways. She loved to travel, even if it was just to San Antonio for the weekend. Nora loved to dance and have a good margarita! She enjoyed watching movies with her family, and watching the game show network. Her favorite pastime was baking sweets. In recent times, Nora’s favorite thing to do was spend time with her grandbaby, Ace. He was her pride and joy.
Nora loved her friends and family so much, especially her fur-babies Bubba and Ranger. She had a contagious smile with a big heart. If you were lucky enough to get to know Nora, you would know that she had a quick wit and always had a good comeback that made you laugh. She wanted the best for everyone, even if that meant telling you the hard truth. We always knew she had our best interest in mind. There are many words to describe Nora and her journey of life. However, the same descriptions always come to mind. She was courageous, fearless, strong, relentless and faithful. She never lost hope, and her relationship with God did not waver; it was unbreakable. Recently, she had become a lector at her church, Saint John the Apostle Catholic Church.
Nora is survived by her husband and soulmate, Joel M. Jasso of Monahans, children Dina Ortiz of Midland, Nicko Jasso & wife Kassy Jasso of Monahans. Her sisters, Rowena Lyles (Lyle Lyles) of Pecos, Linda Carrasco of Pecos, Maria Garcia (Greg Garcia) of Midland. Her parents Louis and Bennie Ortiz of Pecos, and her lovely grandbaby Ace Joel Jasso of Monahans.
Nora is preceded in death by her brother Michael Ortiz of Pecos, her mother and father-in-law Maria and Hilario Jasso of Pecos, her niece Heather Jasso of Monahans, and brother-in-laws Hilario Jasso Jr, and Ruben Jasso, both of Monahans.
