Refugio Rey, Jr.

March 23, 1944 — July 10, 2023

Monahans

Refugio, Rey Jr., "R.E.", beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023, at the age of 79.  He died peacefully with his cherished wife Ema and their children by his side.

He was born in Fort Stockton on March 23, 1944, to Refugio and Anita Rey, and grew up in Imperial, TX. He was a lifelong resident of West Texas and most recently lived in Monahans, TX where he was known for his award-winning pecans. One of his favorite pastimes was collecting and shelling pecans to enter the annual pecan show. He took great pride in sharing those pecans, especially during the holidays.

Refugio, fondly known as "Junior", enjoyed watching NASCAR, and cheering on his favorite sports teams, the Texas Longhorns, Buena Vista Longhorns, and Monahans Loboes.  His love for sports was known by all those who were close to him, and he was always quick with local sports trivia and recollections.

He was a dedicated family man, and his greatest happiness was spending quality time with family. He loved his role as "Tato" and enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren learn and grow. He was always ready to share his support and wisdom and lend a hand or an encouraging story when needed. He suited up in our numerous team colors to show his team spirit, and we will cherish our memories of his love and dedication.

Refugio was preceded in death by his parents, Anita and Refugio Rey; his brothers Lolo Rey, Raul Rey, and David Rey; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jesusita and Julian Heredia. He is survived by his wife Ema Rey; their children and spouses, Kristi Rey and husband David James; Serena Montez and husband Israel Montez and their children, Reina and her partner, Aldo and their children Ely, Riley, and Raiya, Marcus, Michael and his wife Mitzel, Malcolm, Mason, Paula and Alina; and Christopher Rey and his wife Lisa Rey and their children, Isaiah and his partner Angelica and their children, Aiden and Levi; and Mariah. He is also survived by his sisters, Juanita Tarin, Dora Gutierrez, and Hortencia Aranda; and brother, Joe Rey.
