Richard Allen Smith

April 19, 1942 – July 24, 2025

On Thursday, July 24, 2025, our precious father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and more importantly, best friend – strong in faith, overflowing with love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family – entered Heaven’s gates.

Richard Allen Smith was born on April 19, 1942, in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Gaylord Murton and Frances Mauberdine Smith. He graduated Kermit High School in 1960. Not long after, he met and married the love of his life, Josephine Kinsey Smith, on September 15, 1961. Together they built a beautiful life rooted in love, laughter, and faith, sharing 60 cherished years together.

Richard, father to 9 children (and anyone that needed a place to stay…), 28 grandchildren, and 47 great-grandchildren – with so many more blessings added along the way. He truly lived for his family, always putting them first and creating a legacy of love, strength, and selflessness.

Those who knew Richard, knew a man who never met a stranger, who would give you the shirt off his back, and who believed deeply in treating everyone with respect and kindness. He had a unique way of making people feel seen, known, and loved. His gentle wisdom, steady faith, and servant’s heart impacted countless lives.

He retired as Superintendent of the Texas Electric Utilities Services Center in Monahans after 28 years of loyal, dedicated service. Afterward, he enjoyed time driving the school bus routes for the late and great Connie Bean at Monahans-Wickett-Pyote ISD, and then he was office manager for S and W Enterprises in Pyote. He considered every one of his work friends as family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Josephine; daughter, Christie Weddle (Garry); grandchildren - Arnold Nall, Raxton Jones, and Camryn Allridge; his parents, Gaylord and Mauberdine Smith; sister, Joyce Speed; and Sister-in-law, Mary Temple Smith.

He is survived by the children he raised: Sabra Smith, Julie (Freddie) Ramos; Allen (Beverly) Smith; Pam (Greg) Rogers; Jeff (Ginger) Smith; Mary (Bruce) Nall; Heather (Larry) Collins, Justin (Kristin) Smith, along with more grandkids, great-grandkids, nieces and nephews than anyone has fingers and toes enough to count; his sister, Cathy (Ronnie) McCoy and brother, Gene Smith.

Pallbearers are as follows: Allen Smith, Jeff Smith, Jay Smith, Greg Rogers, Larry Collins, Justin Smith, Freddy Ramos, and Ryan Jones.

Honorary Pallbearers are: Colbey Ford, Bruce Nall, and Garry Weddle.

He was our rock, our guide, and our greatest blessing. We are comforted in knowing that he is now at home, at peace, and reunited with the loved ones who went before him. And we will take him with us wherever we go.
