Velma Fay Cox (1939–2026) was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was defined by gentleness, deep faith, and an unwavering commitment to her family.

Born in 1939, Velma grew up in Lamesa, TX, one of six children by her parents Alvin Barnett Cates and Velma Smith Cates. Early childhood tragedy took her father, mother, and siblings, Oliver and Lavern at age six.

There isn't much in Lamesa but in between the dirt devils and heat waves she met the love of her life, Gordon Cox. In 1956 they were married. Together, they shared a remarkable bond spanning over six decades of marriage, walking side by side in work, ministry, and life. Their union was anchored in the Lord, creating a home filled with faith, prayer, and steady encouragement. Whenever anxiety or hardship arose, Gordon was right by her side—ready to make her laugh, share a story, hold her hand in prayer, and lift her spirits.

Dec 20, 1956, they had their son, Gordon B. Cox, they completed their family on Aug 10, 1960, with the birth of their daughter, Klata J. Cox.

Velma’s heart as a mother was defined by selflessness and protection, and fierce love. She raised her own two children with absolute devotion and extended her care to raise her brother JB’s children for several years, often remarking with a smile that having three sets of twins made it feel like raising a house full of pairs. Her gentleness was unforgettable to all who knew her—though shy and quiet by nature, her strength as a mother and grandmother was boundless.

Her legacy of love continued to grow through Gordys marriage to Cindy blessing her with grandchildren—Daniel, Nikki, Nicholas, and Katie. Furthermore, Klatas marriage and children Christopher and Chelsea. Even richer by the arrival of eight great-grandchildren.

Velma Cox passing on Aug 28, 2026, has made this world a little dimmer, but those whom she is survived by can't wait for the day of their reunion. When we will feel her light and love again.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon Cox; her daughter, Klata Hernandez; her son, Gordy Cox and wife, Cindy Cox; Jim Carr, Daniel Cox, Breonna Nicholas Cox, Veronica Cox, Nikki Cox, Katie Garcia, Ryan Garcia, Chris Weinzel, Chelsea Green, Phillip Green; 8 great grandchildren; her brother, David Cates and wife, Gisela Cates; her brother, Alvin Cates and wife, Margaret Cates and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will take place on Monday, August 31, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Harkey Funeral Home. A service to celebrate her life is scheduled on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Justin Rhodes officiating. Burial to follow at Monahans Memorial Cemetery.
