Monahans

Sandra Bettie Lee Locke, Sandy, 78, of Monahans, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, in Midland, Texas.

Sandy was bom in Compton, California to Roberta and Joe Lee on January 16, 1944.

Sandy grew up on an oil lease outside of Royalty, Texas where she and lifelong friend, David Childs had many adventures. Sandy attended Grandfalls High School, where her music career began blossoming, graduating in 1962. She went on to attend Lubbock Christian College where she received an Associate in Applied Arts degree in 1964. In 1967 Sandy received a Bachelor of Science degree from Abilene Christian College. Sandy attended Sul Ross State University to earn her Master of Education degree in 1976.

Sandy was employed by Monahans-Wickett-Pyote ISD for 32 years. She spent those years at Gensler Elementary in Wickett, Texas holding more than one position. She and her friend, fellow teacher, Kaye Rogers, were the idea and implementation of the spectacular Gensler Christmas Plays. The extravagant plays included all the students from each grade level. The amazing duo, Sandy and Kaye, supported and directed adult summer theater in Wickett during the '80’s.

Sandy was a woman of many talents. A keen musician, Sandy regularly played the piano and guitar. The accordion, banjo, harmonica, and ukulele also resided in her musical repertoire. She was also an accomplished artist. Pencil, colored pencil, and watercolor were her favorite mediums. Windmills, spurs, all things cowboy really were her go to subjects. Her most recent art was all about feathers; she spent many hours getting those feathers to float and drift on her paper.

Later in life Sandy was involved with the local theater movement, both as an actress and musician.

As much as Sandy enjoyed music, fishing was truly a passion. True fishing did not occur in a boat! Bird watching was another of Sandy's passion. While she enjoyed all birds, she was particularly fond of hummingbirds. She spent many hours photographing any birds that chose to visit her backyard.

Sandy is preceded in death by her birth mother,Roberta Lee, and life mother, Thelma Ritchey, father, Joe Lee, and half brother Wallace Lee. Sandy is survived by her half brother Robert Joe Lee of New Jersey.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Schoolcraft, Logan Schoolcraft, Orrin Schoolcraft, Troy Ross, and Kent Sellars.
