Simon Acosta Sr.

November 4, 1949 — April 18, 2021

Monahans, Texas

Simon Acosta Sr., a lifelong resident of Monahans, Texas, passed away on April 18, 2021. He was born to Aurora and Eleuterio Acosta on November 4, 1949.

In September of 1971, he married Alicia Nunez. Together, they raised their family of five children in Monahans, Texas. He spent the majority of his 30 years in the oilfield with Chevron Oil and Gas. He shifted his career and retired as a sergeant after 10 years with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Simon was a man of few words but many hobbies. His most well-known and shared hobby was fishing. He loved to take his family fishing at any lake or pond he could find. Every summer he and his kids spent hours at the lake, where he taught them how to hook bait, cast the line, and wait, and wait...and wait--don’t reel it in yet, just wait. He showed his affection through these hobbies, as he showed his kids and then their kids his love for fishing. During the evenings, he’d take his grandkids with him to play bingo, another favorite hobby of his. On weekends, the whole family was involved in projects, whether it was gardening or woodworking, he always taught his family how to create something together.

Simon was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aurora and Eleuterio Acosta; sisters, Angela Garcia, Dominga Gavaldon, and Santos Baker; and longtime companion, Deborah Chappell.

He is survived by his daughters, Naomi Hernandez, Nancy and Rachael Pool, and Leticia Acosta; sons, Simon Acosta Jr. and Sylvia and Larry Acosta and Susan; sisters, Rosa Sanchez and Consuelo Salazar; brothers, Frank Acosta and Miguel Acosta; grandchildren, Kendra and Daimyan Hernandez, Kelsey Fuentez, Madison and Nicholas Pool, Lindsey, Shelby, and Audriy Acosta; great-grandchildren, Marcos Diaz JR and Alder Keel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
